RODENTS

QUICK FACTS ON ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS

The odorous house ant is the type of ant most likely to be found in your kitchen. This ant likes to eat sweets and is especially fond of honeydew. The odorous house ant gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smell it gives off when crushed.  Odorous house ants do not pose a public health risk, but they can contaminate food and should be avoided.

SIX STEPS TO AN ANT-FREE HOME

  1. Know Where to Look- Ants most frequently infest kitchens, but can also be found in bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, basements, and inside walls.

  2. Eliminate Water Sources- Repair leaky pipes, check under sinks for moisture, consider using a dehumidifier in damp spaces and ensure that downspouts and gutters are functioning properly so that water flows away from the home.

  3. Eliminate Food Sources- Keep your kitchen tidy, store food in sealed containers, and keep ripe fruit in the refrigerator. Wipe down sticky jars, and use a lid on trashcans.

  4. Watch Your Pets- Keep food and water bowls clean. Store pet food in a sealed plastic container.

  5. Eliminate Access Points- Seal cracks/crevices on the outside of your home and trim trees and bushes away from the home.

  6. Get Help- Infestations can continue to grow if not properly treated. Call SonEquity for effective treatment options.

Homeowners must pay close attention to signs of an infestation and take action if ants are found. The first step to eliminating an infestation is to identify the ant  species, which will help determine the necessary course of treatment. Use this guide to help determine the ant species, or contact SonEquity for help!
